INCIDENT:

Our older son, a 17 year old, was overheard in the classroom saying a bad word by his teacher and was given a citation.  He went to court and after we sat through about 15 other cases and we observed how the judge handled each case (by huge fines and unfair/unreasonable treatment of these kids) we told our son to plead not guilty and request a jury trial.  Judge didn't seem too pleased with that.  The "offense" was in January, the court date in February, here it is nearing the end of August (2008) and we have not heard one thing more since then.  Nothing from the school, nothing from the court...nothing!  We even brought this up last week to the "new" superintendent, advising him of our surprise at having heard nothing.  He was shocked and said he would look into it.  What we observed that day in court was simply amazing...expecting kids to pay fines over $500 w/in a months time!  If I worked a full time job, I would not have an EXTRA $500 to pay the court!  So, they are in essence sentencing these kids to the possibility of more fines because they will have to work full time to pay the fine in an effort to avoid spending time in jail!  And our district wonders why we have such a high rate of high school aged kids who do not attend this school.
